Produit par/Produced by/Productor : Christiaan Muller
Pays/Country/País : Portugal
Type/Tipo : Poetry & Sound
Synopsis/Resume/Descripción : Poetry Soundscapes is a podcast that invites listeners to immerse themselves in a world of fieldrecordings, a little music and poetry. The podcast begins with a reflection by Charles Simic on the role of art in expressing the impossible predicament that we all find ourselves in as human beings. In the context of poetry, the predicament often refers to the limitations and challenges that the poet faces in trying to express their thoughts and emotions through language, as well as the existential struggles that are part of the human condition. The host shares a personal story of a childhood experience where he found himself in a cold, dark room counting the tolling of a church bell to pass the time. He argues that the cold and discomfort of the room actually added to the experience, as it allowed him to appreciate the warmth and comfort of his bed. The host reflects on the beauty of the world and the importance of taking the time to appreciate it. He suggests that, like the experience of being cold in a warm bed, we need contrasts in life in order to fully appreciate the moments of joy and beauty.

Synopsis/Resume/Descripción : My artistic intention with this piece was to convey the nostalgia that comes with the passing of time. This was depicted through the use of MIDI sampling techniques which mimic the ticking sound of a clock. As the piece progresses, this ticking can be heard to be layered, creating a sense of momentum as ‘time’ progresses. Panning effects were also used on this ticking sound to create a notion of the piece surrounding the listener, in almost a circular motion like how time can be perceived. I placed this sound at the start and end to create structure in the piece which can be heard to end with the ticking sound and the sound of a crash, reversed to indicate what could be, the sudden feeling of one’s time stopping. I also incorporated sounds which reminded me of nature such as thunder and rain to play in the background. This adds to the ambient feel of the piece and also, symbolises how time passes with nature. The melody and synthesised sounds were produced also through MIDI sampling and were incorporated to encapsulate the feelings of nostalgia associated with the passing of time. Through this technique, I looped the synthesiser which can be heard at the start to create a subtle beat to depict the forward momentum of time.
194. Titre/Title/Título : Windstring
Produit par/Produced by/Productor : Cory Blair aka Posh Monk
Pays/Country/País : Germany
Type/Tipo : Experimental
Synopsis/Resume/Descripción : The shore is my place of homecoming. Windstring is a short form experimental recomposition of Nyokabi Kariũki’s Equator song. In this piece, I layered vocals, synth, and a field recording from the beach in Mantoloking, NJ, near where I grew up. Windstring captures the exact moment when my classical guitar harmonised its own strings in the wind, without playing a note. Similar to blowing into the top of an empty bottle and hearing the sound reverberate. May the unexpected sounds bring us home.

Synopsis/Resume/Descripción : “Glaneuses et Vers de Terre” is a collection of research practices by choreographer Emilie Gallier, visual artist Nina Boas and artist/editor Nienke Terpsma on ways of being with landscape as we are absorbed within it rather than as a detached spectacle. These 60 sec. are a re-digestion of some materials gleaned for “Gleaners and the Worms, or Book Worms and the Worm Book”, a 60 min. performance in spring 2023. Part of it was a grafting of living soil. You hear bits of a conversation between Emilie and living soils gardener Cyril Gallier, a bird that can count to 11, streetsounds of Rotterdam, voice, Blippo Box and Qbird.
